CCV asks all faculty, including online, in-person, high school, and technical center teachers to maintain a syllabus and gradebook in Canvas. This allows the College to have a permanent record of the course should students dispute a grade or require details for transferring credit at some point in their future academic careers.
Because Fast Forward (FF) and Concurrent Enrollment (CE) teachers already maintain another gradebook for their secondary class, they have two options when creating the Canvas gradebook for their college class. Furthermore, CCV staff can assist them with developing the gradebook so it can be “rolled over” and used in future semesters if their evaluation criteria remain the same. The gradebook should reflect all major evaluation criteria (or categories) in the syllabus, but students are not required to upload materials into Canvas and teachers are not expected to respond to or grade individual assignments, tests, or projects within the Canvas site.
Gradebook Design
Option #1
Faculty maintain the gradebook on a weekly basis throughout the semester, including grades for all assignments, projects, tests, and other activities that occurred during the week. Gradebook is built to calculate grade on a rolling basis so students can stay up to date on their performance in
the class.
Option #2
Gradebook includes weighted categories for all graded components on the syllabus, which may include a variety of learning tasks. Teachers enter grades at the midpoint and end of the semester for each weighted category. The weighting of categories should align with the course syllabus, so that students can see how their final grade is calculated, and the progress they are making toward that end. For example:
- Homework Assignments: 25%
- Quizzes and Tests: 25%
- Two papers: 10%
- Final Project: 15%
- Presentation: 10%
- Attendance and Participation: 15%
Whichever option is chosen, it is important that the gradebook reflects student work that occurs during the college-level course. Because students may have been working on skills leading up to the start of the course, we recommend teachers include a review assignment early in the semester and record it in the gradebook.
